2012 Sports Predictions

With the college football season nearing its end, I think it is time to take a look at what 2012 will bring to the sports world.

Baseball
It seems as if baseball just ended, but we are less than two months away front he start of Spring Training! With the exciting pickups that the Marlins made this offseason, I think they are set up nicely for a strong showing this summer. Whether or not the big names will lead to October baseball, I'm not sure, but I think fans will have a lot to cheer about this year.

Prediction:  90+ wins and at least a Wild Card playoff berth

Basketball
After seeing the Miami Heat in action, with a year of chemistry under their belts, I don't think there is a team out there that can run the court like they can. With two of the best fast-break players in the league (in Wade and LeBron) there is no stopping them on a run out. I wouldn't be surprised if they are top 5 in scoring and scoring defense this year. And enough of the Big 3/Big 2 mumbo jumbo. Chris Bosh is a great PF. He's no LeBron, but he's definitely top 5 in the league at his position.  With the shortened season chemistry is crucial in the early weeks. With almost the entire same lineup as last year, plus an exciting rookie PG Norris Cole, I think the Heat of a step up on some of the other teams that were struggling to fill roster spots.

Prediction:  57-9 in the regular season and less than 5 losses in the playoffs en route to an NBA Championship. Also, LeBron is going to win the MVP award and average over 30 ppg.

Football
With Tim Tebow stumbling into the playoffs I don't see them contending for a Super Bowl. (But that's just what Tebow wants people to think!) Mayyyybe they get past Pittsburgh with a hurt Big Ben, but the batteries in the 'Tebow Time' clock are running out of juice.

Prediction:  Saints over the Patriots in the Super Bowl

My Redskins haven't had the best of seasons. In fact, I was one of the fans hoping that they would tank it to get a better draft pick. We need to improve at the QB position and there are a few good ones that could provide just that in the draft. Whether it's trading up to get Andrew Luck, or taking RGIII with the 6th pick, both would be welcomed in my eyes.

Prediction:  If the Skins draft a QB, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict 10 wins and the NFC East title! I saw what Cam Newton did this year and I wouldn't be surprised if they made the playoffs next year.

Graduation Announcements

It's been over a month since graduation, and in classic Steranka fashion we have yet to mail out my graduation announcements. It's been partly due to a busy holidays, interviews, and Moms surgery. The cards are all done but we still need to address the envelopes.

For a sneak peak of what it looks like, check out the pictures below. The first one is on the front and the other one is on the inside.

FYI: Mom will probably be headed home from the hospital tomorrow! It will be good to get her back home and in her own environment.

Along with these photos, Mom wanted to put a quote. So, of course, she went with this lovely Dr. Seusse quote...

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.”

Orange Bowl Massacre

Last Night me and Dad went to the Orange Bowl to root on our Mountaineers as they took on the Clemson Tigers. In typical WVU fashion, we got a couple hours of tailgating in. After chit-chatting up a few Clemson fans, it was time to enter the stadium. Our seats were great, sitting 18 rows up at the 50 yd line.

The WVU band, The Pride of West Virginia came out and put on a good performance. Clemson's band came out strong but had a weak finish, leaving their fans quiet. Perhaps it was a sign of things to come for the actual game!

After trading punts to start off the game, Clemson and West Virginia traded TD scoring drives twice. WVU held Clemson to a FG on their next drive and then a go-ahead touchdown ensued. Then came the turning point for the game. Dan Patrick hosts a show NFL Turning Point on Versus, which looks back at the previous week's important plays in the from each game. If they were covering college football, this would most certainly be the play they would highlight.

With Clemson trailing 21-17, they had driven the ball down inside the 10 yard line. I was sure they were going to pound it in because of the way the game had been going. They called a run play and the ball carrier was stood up right at the goal line. I thought he was in. Then I see a West Virginia player running the opposite way. AND WAIT! He's got the ball!!! 99 yards to the house! I was utterly shocked. It wasn't until the player was about 80 yards into the run before I started cheering because I was so shocked at what happened.  From that point on it wasn't even a contest. Touchdown after touchdown. The WVU score just kept getting bigger and bigger. At halftime we were leading 49-20 so me and Dad left the game to head back to the hospital and spend some more time with Mom since she was all alone.  From there we saw the game come to an end with a final score of 70-33! I could go through all of the records that were shattered during the game but I think I'll just show you some of the Instagrams I took during the game. Enjoy!

Good Luck Mom!

Today's post goes out to the most amazing woman I know, my mother Joann! She is going in right now to get her left knee replaced! I know she will do great.

For Christmas this year, like every year, we struggle with figuring out what to buy her for Christmas. Finally, when I asked her what she wanted she mentioned a perfume and slippers. Then she says, 'You know what I really want? I know I'm not going to get it but I really want it.' She precedes to show me a picture of a giant 9 foot tall sunflower sculpture, her favorite flower.

Then she tells me that she called and that someone had already bought it, and that another person had recently inquired about it. Christmas morning comes and she peeked outside to see if someone had came and installed it overnight. Nothing was there. So, we are opening presents and she gets to her last box. She opens it and inside there is a small sunflower ornament. 'What's this mean?" she says. Then she gets to the piece of paper that was in the box and it was a picture of the sculpture. My dad was the one who bought it and it was to be delivered later in the week. She flipped out! The video will be coming soon, which is PRICELESS! But for now, I leave you with a few pics from the day it arrived.

LifeProof Underwater Review

Okay, I know I was hyping up the LifeProof case yesterday as the best thing since sliced bread, but after 3 hours in the pool/hot tub last night I'm sticking with my story. Previously I had only put my phone under 6 inches of water. Yesterday I braved it through the freezing Florida weather (55 degrees) and took a dip in the pool.

This time I didn't hesitate. I dove right in, iPhone in hand. I took my phone down to the deepest point in my pool, 6 feet, with no problems. I also hopped in the jacuzzi (because further testing of the case needed to be done, of course). The 100+ degree water temperatures didn't seem to phase the phone.

I played a song underwater, which sounded remarkable clear, considering. I'm not sure your going to be needing to listen to a lot of music underwater but the concept seems more for people wanting to listen to music in the rain/shower. You can buy a waterproof set of headphones from the LifeProof website for as little as $30.

The ONLY downside I found in the test was that I couldn't actually use the touchscreen underwater. While this isn't a big problem, as you can take pictures and record video by pressing the volume button, in the video I posted yesterday it shows 'Mr. LifeProof' using his screen and swiping underwater. Not sure if the case needs to be broken in longer or if saltwater vs freshwater is a factor but I'll look into it. Here is a picture I took in the hot tub. Keep in mind, this was taken with the front facing camera, which is not as strong as the one on the back of the phone. Nevertheless, you can still get some great underwater photos.

Two New Cameras

Good news! I have two new cameras for the new year.  The big one is the DSLR that I got for Christmas. It is the Canon EOS Rebel T2i.  You may have seen commercials for the T3i over the holidays. It's basically the same thing without a flip out display. Oh, and you save about $300 by getting last years model! In addition to the standard 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera, I got a 75-300mm lens which is AMAZING! I went outside and took a picture of a bee that was flying around and you can seriously see the hairs on little bugger! Pictures are sooo clear!

The second weapon that I'll be shooting with this year is one that I already had, my iPhone! I have the iPhone 4s, which has an 8MP camera on it.  But that's not it! I just bought the LifeProof case for it, which allows you to take your phone UNDERWATER!!! It's not one of those cases that if your phone drops in the water for a few seconds it might be alright.  The LifeProof case literally let's you take your phone in the pool, the ocean, a rainstorm and use it as usual.  Yes, thats right! You can snap underwater photos and videos!  So far, I have only run a little test in my sink under 6 inches of water (I was SO scared, haha).  The LifeProof website which you can visit HERE says that you can take the phone under 5 feet of water. But, in the video of the LifeProof guy snorkeling with his iPhone, he says he went down to about 10 feet.  I'm sure you could take it deeper but I wouldn't risk it (unless your up for an upgrade)!  The case is a bit pricey at $80.  However, it is PERFECT for those of you with butterfingers or those looking to turn their iPhone into an underwater camera.  You can get it at most electronic stores if you don't want to wait for shipping online. I bought mine at Best Buy.

I'll try and take some underwater pics sometime this week. Stay tuned!

It's A New Year!

Ok, I admit it. I've been slacking majorly in my posting over the last few weeks.  From graduation, to moving back home to Florida, it has gotten me behind, but I promise I will rally for 2012.  I vow to make a post every day this year! That's right, 366 posts as it is a leap year!

2011 was a crazy year for me.  For the most part it was all about school as I was trying to finish up strong and graduate. After a slow start Freshman year, I made a goal to graduate with a 3.0 GPA. Heading into my last semester I had a 2.98 GPA. With 4 classes left, I had to get 3 B's and one A to reach it.  Turns out I got straight A's for the first time ever.  Talk about finishing on a high note!

So, now it is time to enter the working world!  I've always been told, "Make sure you do something that you like, otherwise your going to hate your job." So, naturally I'm looking at my first love, Sports.  Hopefully I'll be getting some good news soon but for now, keep your fingers crossed.

For my first post of 2012, I will look back at last months graduation.  Mom, Dad, Alexandra, and Grandma Steranka came into Morgantown to watch me walk.  The kicker for the whole weekend was that the WVU men's basketball team was hosting University of Miami the night before graduation.  And if you don't know, that's where my sister Alexandra graduated from college!  After graduation, we celebrated with some champagne and then took some pictures around campus.  It was a great weekend that I was glad to finally share with my family.

Here's to a great 20 Dozen! (haha)
